Preparing for the big day...
Your child’s first day at school is a day to
remember for the rest of his/her life.
You can help to make it a really happy one.
Beforehand...
Be positive with your child in preparing him/her for school. Explain what will happen - meeting the teacher, making new friends, breaks, sitting down, tidy up time, home time.
School Books...
Your child’s books will be taken up on the first day and the teacher will hold on to them until such time as they are needed. All books/copies should have your child’s name on the front cover.
Coming in...
When you arrive in the classroom, be as casual as you can. Your child will meet the teacher and the other children. Having given assurance you will be back to collect him/her, wave goodbye and make your getaway to the school hall for a “cuppa”
Going home...
Junior Infants go home at the earlier time of
12 o’clock for the first 7 school days at school.
The shortened day is invaluable in helping children adjust to the routine of school.
About Our School
In a recent Whole School Evaluation carried out by a Department of Education & Skills inspector, Scoil Mhainchín was commended for the quality of teaching and learning. It was noted that pupils are courteous, well behaved and eager to learn. Parents were also praised for their invaluable support they give the school and its activities. We have a strong tradition of sport and music at Scoil Mhainchín and we offer a wide range of activities in our school. Sports activities include soccer, basketball, football, hurling, swimming and athletics. The children compete in inter schools competitions in some of the above. Each year children are taken on field trips which may include the beach, woodland, river, the Burren and historical Ennistymon.
Children do Ceilí dancing, tin whistle and also take part in the school choir, singing in local carol services and Church celebrations. Speech and Drama classes are on offer as an after school activity.
Scoil Mhainchín runs an Infant Stay-On Club for Junior and Senior Infants from 1:40 - 2:40.
We are a Green School and are currently working towards our second Green Flag for Energy Conservation.
We are privileged to have great parental involvement in our school. Parents support teachers in the areas of sport, art, science and field trips.
Parents are encouraged to become involved in their children's learning through programmes and initiatives such as Junior Achievement, Maths For Fun, Science For Fun, Storytime and Shared Reading.
